Autumn Cyclo-Cross

As well as our Go-Ride sessions the autumn sees the cyclo-cross racing season which lasts from September until January.

What is Cyclo-Cross? Basically cross country running, but on a bike.

Riders race for 15 to 60 minutes (depending on age) around multiple laps of a parkland course. The fun with cyclo-cross is the varied courses and terrain, and the added element of the weather so courses can be dry and fast, or wet and slippy!

The cyclo-cross season has just started and this is an excellent introduction to cycle racing as a sport, both for young and not-so-young riders.

There are races every weekend in the Wiltshire, Gloucester, Hampshire region with specific races for Under 10s, Under 12s and Under 16s, Adults, women and veterans.

There are two regional leagues accessible from Swindon.

The Western League, based around Bristol and Gloucester. And the Wessex League based around Newbury and Southampton area. Both leagues run regular races during the season. Anyone can take part, you need a bike suitable for off-road riding, a helmet and the appropriate entry fee which is in the order of £3 for Under 12 riders.

Here is a short video of a local Under 12s cyclo-cross race held in January at Chavenage House near Tetbury. It was a particularly wet and muddy day!
